Why many recruiters have a sheep mentally? (and why it is hurting you)

As a digitally savvy entrepreneur with an interest in the industry, I see the same mistakes being made by nearly every recruiter. Worst of all, nearly everyone is doing the same thing and afraid to push the boundaries. It’s what I call the sheep mentality. Let’s just do what everyone else is doing as it seems to work and we get ok results. Comments like “we have always done it like this” will soon see some recruiters redundant if they don’t change their ways and embrace the digital world.

So how do know if you are guilty of this sheep mentally? Start by asking yourself these questions:

  • Do I reach out to candidates on Linked In only when I want to interview someone for a role I am trying to fill?
  • Am I really using Linked In effectively to elevate my personal and business brand?
  • Have I fully optimised my LinkedIn page to make it searchable?
  • Do people compliment me on my digital visibility?
  • Is my social media stream mainly full of job ads?
  • Do I write articles that don’t offer my clients or candidates any value at all because they are too sales focused?
  • Do I understand how to leverage my brand across traditional and digital platforms?
  • Am I taking opportunities to leverage my companies content?
  • Is my content focused on me rather than being focused on client and candidate outcomes?
  • Can I name 3 things that I’m doing that no one else (or very few people) in my industry do? (be honest)
  • Do I keep up to date on the latest digital trends, tools & platforms in order to stay ahead of my competitors?
  • Am I overwhelmed by digital and don’t know where to start?

I guarantee your digital visibility isn’t being optimised to its full potential which equals missed opportunities.

Digital provides a massive opportunity for recruiters to create valuable and networks that are engaged and not just sit on a database.  Using digital channels you can find, communicate and build relationships with clients and candidates Australia wide (or across the Globe if that’s your goal). You can join in with various communities, show your expertise, share your brand culture, find prospects, build long term relationships and have two way communication.

Digital has changed the way you should be doing business. But you need to start thinking differently and find ways to use your digital channels to innovate. This video on looking outside your industry might help to get you started.

Automatically schedule your blogs with a click of a button

Everyone knows I love my digital tools – anything that saves me time and makes life easier is a good thing.

I recently discovered MissingLett_r. If you have a blog it creates a unique social marketing campaign, spread out over a year, minutes after you publish your next blog post.

To use it you just register your blog’s RSS feed and you’re done! When you publish a new article they automatically notify you with a personalised social marketing campaign for it. All you have to do is review and then approve it! Yes it really is that easy. Saves you have to then go and create & schedule content for your social media channels.

Always a believer if you find a great product, then share it, I spoke to CEO and founder of Missinglett_r, Benjamin Dell and asked him 3 quick questions about the new service:

Where did the idea come from?

I also run a web development agency. Through that, we started noticing a trend amongst our clients that blogged. In essence, they weren’t really doing it very effectively. Some would share their new blog posts on Twitter and other social networks once (typically the day it was published), very few would remember to share it again and almost none would have a systematic plan in place to share the article over a sustained period of time. We knew there had to be a better way. Missinglettr was born at that point.

What types of businesses are using it?

We’re finding all sorts of businesses using missinglettr. From the individual at home that’s focused on building their personal brand, through to serious companies looking to extend their reach. We also work with social marketing agencies who are looking for new ways to add value to their own customers.

What’s next for Missinglett_r – world domination?

Always! But whilst we’re biding our time (and no doubt, stroking a cat with an evil glint in our eye), we’re super focused on a couple of key areas. In the short term, you can expect to see additional social networks added, as well as improved scheduling flexibility and ways in which you can better brand the content that we create for you.

This is a great tool for building your automatically building your content calender so you have a pipeline of great content being shared. They have a free plan to connect one social channel or pay $10 a month and join several. Money well spent I say.

How answering your email can increase your sales

One thing that always baffles me us why businesses spend thousands of dollars on advertising then can’t even answer a customer enquiry via email. Why, why, why??

This makes absolutely NO sense. These are the businesses that complain that their ad campaigns didn’t work when it actual fact the received leads and traffic that the business didn’t convert because they didn’t do the simplest thing and answer the customer enquiry.

Digital advertising Rule 101 – answer customer queries. If someone is taking the time to email you they are genuinely interested in buying your product. Answer them!! Promptly!!

email-marketing

This one simple thing can add thousands of dollars in sales to your bottom line each year. It baffles me why so many businesses ignore email queries. Someone please explain it to me? If someone walked into your store and asked about a product would you ignore them? I don’t think so. So why do you treat them differently online?

I experience this every single day and it baffles me constantly.  And guess what, when someone doesn’t respond I wipe them forever and buy from the competitor. So you’ve not just lost this sale but future sales as well. Pretty damn stupid marketing tactic if you ask me.

Don’t be dumb. Respond to your emails and watch your sales increase.

Don’t forget the BASICS!

I love the digital world and I am digital girl but one thing that annoys me is businesses that skip the basic principles when delivering marketing messages to their audience.

Everything from readable content on digital signs to having your contact details and address on your website. I see it constantly! Nothing is more annoying for your potential customers than unreturned emails, hard to find contact information or confusing messaging.

So here are my BASICS. See if you tick all the boxes or if you need to go back to basics!

B     Be polite, promote and passionate – remember your passion comes through in everything you do and every customer transaction. No matter what always be polite and promote what your brand stands for

A    Answer your emails and customer enquiries – it should go without saying however I have lost count with the amount of email enquiries I have sent to businesses that have gone unanswered. Lost sales!

S    Say what you do and do what you say – clearly state what you do in lamens terms on your website and marketing and do what you say you will.

I      Integrate with other marketing platforms – make sure you carry your message across all marketing platforms so the customers can opt in from every platform they chose to

C     Call to action – don’t forget to tell your customers what you want them to do.

S     Simple is best – don’t overcomplicate everything.

Get the basics right before progressing to more complex strategies and solutions for your business. And if you need an ‘outside in’ perspective, talk to us about doing a Digital Review.
