Busy is not an excuse!!

Busy is not an excuse! Everyone is busy and you will always find time for the things you want to do however you probably don’t prioritise time on what you should or need to do.

It is amazing what you can accomplish in a short amount of time. So instead of making the ‘I’m too busy’ excuse, be proactive and break down some of these ‘need to do’ tasks into 5-minute chunks of time. So I challenge you to see what you can do in 5 minutes. (and you have lots of 5-minute breaks where you do this, no matter busy you think you are).

Here are some suggestions on what you can do in 5 minutes:

  • Answer some emails!
  • Watch 2 videos to learn something new
  • Sign up to a new digital platform
  • Make a list of potential blog articles
  • Create a To Do list
  • Schedule some of these tasks in your Email calender
  • Read an article or Fact Sheet
  • Update your LinkedIn profile
  • Send a thank you note or card
  • Retweet 3 relevant tweets to your audience
  • Claim a social media profile on a new channel
  • Make a social media post
  • Research a new digital topic
  • Subscribe to 2 or 3 newsletters of interest
  • Read 1-2 EDM’s sitting in your inbox
  • Book tickets to a new event
  • Book a meeting with your digital manager to start that digital strategy

Imagine if you took 3 x 5-minute breaks a day to do this, how much you would actually achieve. If you want to find the time, you will. So stop with the excuses and put some priority around building your digital visibility, before you need to use those 5 minutes to find a new job!

Add some sparkle to your digital personality

As a business it is important to show a personality that reflects the brand culture. Remember you are doing business with people so a human and relatable element to what you do is vital for success.

You can add a little bit of sparkle to your digital personality. Even in the most traditional business types there is no room for drab or boring. People want to do business with people they like and can relate to. Boring does not cut it anymore!

It is possible to mix fun & personality with business and this the best place to do this is in your language and content on your digital channels, starting with your website.  The words and language you use should reflect what you do. I have so many conversations with businesses who tell me one thing but their story does not even remotely be seen on their website. There is a total disconnect!

The other key area is in the content you create. Social media, blogs, video, podcasts, Fact Sheets, whatever the format or channel, you ca add your own touch of sparkle or personality to it.

Who does this well?  Brands and people that don’t apologise for being who they are but celebrate their uniqueness. Think Gary van Der Chuck, Marie Forleo, Michelle Bridges, Black Milk Clothing, Air BnB, Uber & Boost Juice. They are not afraid to be a little quirky, outside the norm and prefer authenticity to perfection and their audiences LOVE them for it.

Here are some tips to help you add some sparkle to your digital personality:

  • Be authentically you –authenticity is a vital component of great digital content. It is why the most successful companies are where they are. Their customers relate to them on their level and even though they might not be perfect, they are authentic.
  • Don’t pretend, be fake or try and be someone you are not – I love Oprah but I am not going to copy her style or try to be someone I am not. People can see through fake!
  • Don’t apologise for being who you are – not everyone will like you and that is OK. You can choose to do business with people you like spending time with. Life is too short to have to deal with people who don’t appreciate you
  • Use different formats & channels – try video, podcasts, fun meme’s or cartoons. Find what works for you, your personality and your audience. Mix it up, test it and refine.
  • Share your story – we all have a unique story to share. Your About Us page should reflect this and doesn’t need to take the same format as every other page out there

Digital doesn’t have to be boring. In fact being boring and highly polished will probably work against you in this personalised fast pace world we live in. Don’t be afraid to add a bit of sparkle and remember to always be you.

Are you using digital to sell?

If you have a sales team (or are a salesperson) you will be very familiar with the terms budget, targets, KPI’s and commission. I know how much work is involved in the entire process including updating CRM systems, paperwork, proposals and sales meetings. Ahhhh a boring but necessary evil of being in sales right?

So in this fast paced, ‘want it now’ world, how are you using digital in the sales process? Digital is a channel that is designed to help make life easier and more efficient so think about how you do just that. They are so many tools and this is just a small selection of tools I’ve used and found useful in the sales process. Obviously what you use will be dictates by your company and their policies but if you have a sales team then I suggest considering these and other tools to enhance your existing offering.

What should be in the salespersons initial arsenal?

  • Setting appointments: Setmore
  • Project Management: Trello
  • CRM: Asana
  • Video messaging: Eyejot
  • Proposals: Proposify
  • Leaning page: Instapages
  • Content: Canva

The less time your sales team spend on setting appointments, writing proposals and updating CRMs the more time they have in front of clients which means more $$ in your pocket. This is why investing in digital a good return for you, especially if you have multiple sales people.  Digital technology should be part of your sales team processes. If you are not using some of these tools, then you are missing out on sales due to inefficient and outdated sales practises. Imagine the value this adds if each salesperson made one extra sale per week or month just by having some additional time to see more customers. It makes perfect financial sense doesn’t it?
